Functionalized Hydroxyapatite

BIO-TESLAB has been producing Hydroxyapatite for ten years

BIO-TESLAB team can synthesize high purity (>97%) hydroxyapatite particles up to 1 kg. Hydroxyapatite is a ceramic material that is the main inorganic component of bone and teeth. It is used in a wide range of orthopedic and dental applications due to its outstanding biocompatibility, bioactivity, and osteoconductivity.

Hydroxyapatite can be used to fabricate bone scaffolds, artificial eye implants, orthopedic coatings, and to fill dental and tooth cavities.

Functional Hydroxyapatite

In recent years, different ions have been doped into the crystal structure of hydroxyapatite to boost its biological performance. These ions alter the lattice parameters of hydroxyapatite, and, ultimately, its dissolution characteristic and biological performance. Working in this direction, BIO-TESLAB and our guests synthesize Sr, Ag, Mg, Zn, etc., substituted hydroxyapatite particles.

Ag doped antibacterial Hydroxyapatite

Hydroxyapatite particles synthesized in our lab, including 1 mol % and above Ag ions, presented 100% antibacterial activity against  E. Coli, S. Aureus, S. Epidermidis, and S. Typhimurium. Our collaborator, Dr. Ayşegül Hoş (Medipol Uni), conducted the quantitative antibacterial activity experiments.

Strontium incorporated Osteo-Inductive Hydroxyapatite

Confocal microscope images (after two days) of MG-63 osteoblast-like cells seeded on pure and Sr-substituted hydroxyapatite particles prepared in BIO-TESLAB. Cells are viable on the pristine hydroxyapatite surface and spread on the surface (left). Although, more cells are observed on the SrHA surfaces, illustrating its stimulation on the proliferation of the cells (right). Cell experiments are done by Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini's group (FAU Erlangen-Nüremberg).

Multi Ion doped (Sr and Ag) antibacterial and bioactive Hydroxyapatite

Sr-Ag-doped hydroxyapatite particles presented antibacterial activity against gram-positive and negative bacteria. Qualitative antibacterial tests were organized by  Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini's group (FAU Erlangen-Nüremberg).
