Short CV

Dr. Fatih Erdem Baştan (born in 1986, İstanbul) has been working as an Assistant Professor at Sakarya University, Engineering Faculty, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering Department. He is a senior researcher at Thermal Spray Research and Development Laboratory (TESLAB). Dr. Baştan, a materials scientist, has a solid background and publications on producing, modifying, and characterization of bio-ceramic powders and coatings such as hydroxyapatite and bioglass. Baştan received a BS degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Kocaeli University (Turkey) in 2009 and received an M.Sc degree in the same department at Sakarya University (Turkey) in 2012.

He went to Germany and studied as a visiting researcher at the Institute for Biomaterials at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg for 1 year (2016-2017). Dr. Baştan worked as a researcher on a project supported by the Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Development, entitled: “The Increasing Capacity and Modernization of the Orthopaedic Implant Coating Production Facility for In Vivo Applications”. He completed a Ph.D. entitled "Producing and Characterization of Thermal Sprayable Strontium Ion Substituted Hydroxyapatite Powder via Spray Drying" in 2018 at Sakarya University. He is highly experienced in using sophisticated laboratory equipment and analyzers. He has been collaborating with prestigious scientists-professors and engineers from the metallurgy and materials science sector.

He is currently working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute of Biomaterials, FAU Erlangen-Nüremberg, with a project funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).

Awards:

  1. Tübitak Scholarship for International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2021)
  2. Sakarya University Rectorate Scholarship for International Research (2016)

Core Competencies

Synthesis and granulation of ceramic powders: Hydrothermal synthesis and chemical precipitation of nanostructured powders, granulation of the particles to micro-spheres via spray drying

Characterization of materials: Physical, chemical, and mechanical characterization of bulk materials, powders, and coatings. Investigation of the crystal structure of the materials by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld Refinement, visualization of the materials’ microstructure with the scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal analysis of materials by thermo-gravimetric analyze-differential thermal analyzes (TG-DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), chemical structure evaluation by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

Coating production: Pure ceramic and polymer/ceramic coating fabrication with plasma spraying, high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF), and electrophoretic deposition (EPD) for biomedical applications.

The aforementioned research activities concluded in the publication of 18 articles in good/excellent journals from SCI cited more than 610 times in Google Scholar (H-index of 9 on Scholar), 5 proceedings presented in international conferences in English, 3 projects funded by the Turkish government agencies.
